X-rays are a useful clinical study but are not always necessary. Examples of when imaging studies may be necessary are trauma, history of infection, or history of cancer. If the results of the imaging study won't change the course of action then they aren't worth the exposure. When they are necessary, filters and screens are used to minimize exposure.
